Hey guys! I wanted to talk about some ways to show love to your mum this Mother’s Day that go beyond the consumerism often pushed around these sorts of holidays. I’m not against presents, but most mums do so much for us and love their families so hard that I get sad seeing “stock gifts” being pushed by so many in the blogging industry. I wanted to share some ways to thoughtfully show personalized love to our moms on the one day a year the whole world is reminded the huge contributions our moms make not only to our lives, but our society as a whole. The Gift of Time Now that I’m older and don’t live with my parents, the biggest thing I miss is quality time together. I think a lot of families can relate, so when I’m thinking about what I want to do for my mum for…

Hey guys! Welcome to the first food post I’ve worked on since I got told I needed to eat differently- Salmon Cake Salad. I’d been struggling a bit with what to eat and how to eat after being told my diet could help control symptoms of inflammation (more about what’s been going on for me in an upcoming post), but these salmon cakes and the accompanying salad was the first time I sat down and ate and felt like “Ok, this is going to be ok.” For me, food is a major source of joy. There’s a food for every situation and you can celebrate with food, comfort with food, gift with food and receive love with food… It’s the best. So being told no butter, no refined wheat, cut the fat, etc etc was NOT something I wanted to hear. I love butter and pasta. And steak. This salmon…

Hellloooo! Today I’m back with my favorites from the month of March, only about halfway through April. I debated on finishing this video and post since while these are FAVORITES, I’m also at least 2 weeks late! Life has been pretty busy. But so many of these items are new to me, or never mentioned before on this blog that I felt like it was really still worth putting this post up to share my favorites. Skincare: Recently I’ve been using a combination of this Biotherm serum and a Biotherm night cream to combat my ridiculously dry skin. I love the combo because it’s starting to breathe some light back into my sad and angry skin which is so appreciated. My night cream is no longer available, but I’d love to try this one! Haircare: I’ve been loving the Big Sexy Hair Weather Proof spray! It’s meant to protect your…

Hey guys! The Sephora Spring sale is starting this Friday for Rouge members (next weekend for VIB’s and Beauty Insiders!) and like most people, I’ve been considering what I might like to buy in the sale! My opportunity to stock up is really downgraded by my tax bill, but I’ve still been looking and considering as I have some gift cards. Bronzer To me, bronzer is the perfect item to purchase in spring/summer. Like most people, I get into a “less makeup” mode in the spring and summer and love focusing on fresh, bronzed and simple looks. My longtime love is Nars Laguna bronzer, but I’d also love to try the liquid version sometime. Becca and Tarte both have great options too (Becca is a little more wearable if you’re pale like me) and I’d LOVE to try a bronzer from Hourglass sometime! Bright lip color I love adding a…

Helllloooo internet friends! First off, welcome to the newly redesigned TheBrokeGirlBlog.com! The change that you’ve been seeing since last week was a months-long labor of love finding the right user interface and doing the back end work necessary to whip this little corner of the internet into a space that can grow with me now that more people are checking out what’s going on here. Life lesson from this one: asking for help is ok, even when you could do it yourself. So what else has been going on since I last did an update post in mid-January? Well, chronologically: Dad and I volunteered at our yearly event supporting a youth robotics group. I love the opportunity to pitch in at an event that encourages our youth to consider careers in science, computing, engineering and applied trades. It’s ultra-cool that it’s held at my work! If you didn’t see me…

Hey guys! So you’ve seen me talk about my love of tacos a few times on this blog- my fish tacos are a favorite to host dinner with friends and my pork tacos are the perfect slow-cooker treat. But I’ve never talked about my favorite taco spices or my favorite side dish to have when I’m having a taco night! Believe it or not… it’s probably not the healthiest to eat just tacos. It’s not the worst, but it’s good to make a salad. My sister made us this corn salad last time we had taco night together and it was perfect. Unlike a lot of corn salads which have raw onion and/or garlic, this recipe has fresh and cooked elements which makes it a little special by my mind. Corn Salad 1 Shallot 1 Jalapeno 2 Cups of Cooked Corn (thawed and drained if you’re using frozen) 1/2 Red Bell…

Hey Guys! If you’re anything like me, you’re probably trying to find ways to incorporate more healthy meals into your diet while still enjoying the flavors that you love. Enter this healthy Mexican-inspired quinoa bowl. It’s loaded with healthy fibre, fats, and protein, so you can feel good about stuffing your face with this one! I adapted this recipe from one my sister made that she found on Damn Delicious. I mostly did this to make it more of a pantry meal with less $ required for a good outcome. I added the beans and spinach to up the protein and iron. There’s no chopping required, isn’t that cool? Just a pot, a strainer, and a spoon. You’re welcome :). Mexican Inspired Quinoa Bowls Serves 4 for $10.73, or $2.68 per serving 1 Cup quinoa – $1.67 1 can of roasted tomatoes- $1.67 1 can of black beans- $0.98 1…

Hey Guys! If you’re like me and you’re living in one of the colder regions of the world, you’re going to see this post and laugh to yourself because there’s still like eight feet of snow, five snowstorms to come, a period of freezing and thawing combined with mud and some rain to make our ways through before spring even thinks about arriving. But, not everyone lives in places like this, and loads of people who do are still starting to think about and budget their landscaping. Recently my sister sold her last property and upgraded to a single family home that she had built- which meant a beautiful, dirt filled lot. Just kidding, it meant she either had to sell her soul to pay for landscaping orrrrr roll up her sleeves and get a bunch of the work done herself to save some money. She’s not the devil incarnate, so she…

Hi Guys! It has been forever since I posted my last affordable home post! How I Spent $660 to Furnish and Decorate my Living Room was one of my most popular posts in 2016 and 2017, so I’m not sure why I haven’t done another since clearly people enjoy these posts! Again, let’s start with what I actually bought in this space: my walnut bar stools ($50 each, local store), my 4 black dining chairs ($60 each, local store), my mirror ($110, Costco), mirrored tray (~$35, Homesense, old) and my sea surf picture ($25, Superstore, old). This brings us to a total of $510 that I spent on the space. So, that obviously means a lot of items were free! My kitchen table was from my parent’s old study and was sitting unused in my dad’s loft. It was originally from Ikea and had a blond lacquered wood top… not really my…

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGfaZSj5tsA] Hi Guys! I’m back with another favorites post, this time talking about some of the items I loved through January and February. Rockstar 24/7 Jeans for Women • Old Navy •  in Black – These are the jeans I replaced my black Walmart jeggings with after I wore them into death. I’m working on repairing them, and also a video/post combo about 5 different ways to style a $40 pair of black jeans! Driving Loafers for Women • Old Navy •  – I love these shoes. I think I said eighty times in the video how comfortable they are. My chiropractor would probably be unimpressed with the lack of support, so maybe don’t go walking 5km in them like I have, but they are a good shoe with a slip-proof sole which I really appreciate. Luxe Studs •  – These studs were a sweet Christmas gift from little Sylvie…
