No Champagne, No Gain

Hey guys!

I told you this was coming. I warned you, even! My love for this “No Champagne No Gain” sweater by Brunette the Label knows no bounds (Canadian friends can buy it directly from Brunette the Label for more affordable prices here).

I may be wearing it right now.

Brunette the Label is a Canadian Brand based in Vancouver that I mentioned in my February 2017 Favorites post, and they’re also the creators of the hilarious “Fries Before Guys” sweatshirt you saw on Jillian Harris here. Don’t even get me started about Jillian Harris, either, because I love her, too. They make t-shirts, sweaters, jogger pants, hats, water bottles and mugs and all are emblazoned with cheeky, funny messages that are perfect for a day lounging on the couch or running errands. Which is exactly what I love to do in my sweater! Notice how that was basically code for, if I’m not at work, I’m wearing my sweater?

Now, before people get mad- these are not $20 sweaters. But they are great quality, extremely soft, well made and printed in Canada. Mine has been washed 20+ times and is still as black and fuzzy as the day I got it. Brunette the Label contributes to the Canadian economy which I am proud to support. I’d rather buy one sweater from these girlbosses than three cheaply made sweaters that someone (potentially literally) slaved over in an underdeveloped country and support a big brand.

Two items I’m totally coveting:

The "Awesome" Water Bottle

The "Boss Babe" Crew | BLACK

What do you love to wear while lounging or running errands? Do you have a favorite Canadian company (or local company, if you’re not Canadian)? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!

Cozy Afternoon In

Hey guys! I’m coming at you with another affordable outfit post! This is one of my favorite combos for a day at home- a cozy sweater that isn’t too thick, but still warm, and a loose pair of joggers. I like this for a cooking day, working on the computer or just watching some TV because it’s comfortable, inexpensive (I make messes cooking sometimes, the last thing I want to do is destroy a beautiful and expensive sweater) and cute!  These pants were snagged on sale for under $10 at Walmart and I’ve linked a bunch of similar options below that are super affordable as well.  This sweater is a thin knit that I picked up at Target a couple of years ago which is sadly not an option anymore in Canada, but don’t worry,  I’ve linked other options for this as well. Absolutely everything is under $25, which I love. Also, shoutout to my sister for letting me take these pictures at her house one day, since some of you may notice that is not my couch!

Heathered Grey

Hey guys!

If you’re searching for some casual outfit inspiration for NYE still, you’ve found your place! If you are looking for something a bit more fancy for an upcoming event at an affordable price, I’ve included a bunch of options under $150 below as well.

These photos were obviously shot a while ago, but I loved that the dress from Dynamite (no longer available) was comfortable enough for dinner or dancing, but that paired with the faux-leather vest was still casual enough to not make me look like an eighteen-year-old celebrating their first booze-allowable New Year’s Eve. If you wanted to go out dancing, I’d switch to some fun pumps and ditch the vest! The Nine West clutch was my nod to color and I love being able to see my bag in the sea of black clutches when getting ready at a girlfriend’s place.

Dressier options:

What are you doing tonight for New Year’s Eve? Let me know in the comments, and whatever you’re up to, I hope you ring in the New Year safely with public transit, taxi, a DD, or safe at home (like me).

Welcoming the Holidays

Hey Guys!

Since in Canada Thanksgiving holiday is in mid-October, it doesn’t signal the “Start of the Holiday Season” like it does in the United States. In fact, I remember when Black Friday didn’t even exist for us (or at the very least, not like it does now), we had our own crazy shopping day (Boxing Day, which is in fact a statutory holiday up here). Growing up, holiday fun started in our family on December 1st when we started our advent calendars! But, as an adult most of my friends start getting in the holiday spirit sometime after observing Remembrance Day. I start as soon as my schedule allows after November 11th now that I live on my own, because Christmas is my favorite season of the year!

I also love the holidays because of the fashion. I know it sounds weird but nothing feels more “holiday” to me than going out Christmas shopping in a fuzzy sweater with a red lip and looking at all of the displays. I love seeing what everyone wears to holiday parties and on Christmas Day (jammies!). December on the Broke Girl Blog will be a month of easy and affordable meals so that you don’t have to worry about that, fashion ideas that are actually affordable, gift giving ideas on a dime and loads of gift guides and holiday decor! I hope you are as excited as I am.

This is an outfit I wore recently to do some holiday shopping and knew I needed to get some photos of to share. Nothing says holiday to me more than a cosy knit and a red lip. The leggings keep it realistic- I wore this out shopping with moccasins but as you can see, it can be dressed up easily with heels for a dinner or casual event. Below I’ve included a little “shop the post” section where you can see similar sweaters, but I’m sure you all have a favorite pair of black pants! I hope this helps with inspiration for a quick and easy holiday inspired outfit.

Fall Fashion Updates

So I recently said in my post about my favorite fall nail colors that I have a super neutral, basic wardrobe because I can’t afford the cost of dressing super seasonally. I thought it would be worth writing a post about how I swap out certain things in my wardrobe and affordable suggestions should you wish to do the same! Everything is linked to the retailer (Boohoo, Dynamite, Joe Fresh, Old Navy) and under $100, I promise. All you have to do is click the picture and you’ll be taken to the retailer. All of these are mostly casual items as I know not everyone works in a formal environment, but I’ll be doing a similar post for work wear, don’t you worry my office girls!

1. Work your weights

No, I’m not telling you to go to the gym, I’d never do that. I’m suggesting you switch up that light sweater for a thicker (and maybe longer) option! In the fall I like to wear open cardigans because it can swing from -2 Celcius to +20 in a single day here in Edmonton. In the morning, I’ll often wear mittens, a hat and a thick scarf with a thick sweater to walk to the bus. In the afternoon, I ditch everything but the sweater. I almost always choose a black or grey to make sure that I can wear this with any outfit I like.

2. Wear your jeans

Every fall I tell myself I’ll just wear tights with my casual dresses and that’ll be fine for fall since I’m not the biggest fan of pants. Until I freeze my butt off one morning and inevitably decide to wear nothing but old man sweatpants allllll winter. Don’t be like me. Well actually, be like me because I just got a new pair of jeans! This is a great time of year to invest in a gorgeous dark wash to wear from errands to a dinner date. You won’t see me pursuing distressed, colored or light wash jeans unless I’m feeling super flush, because a good dark wash or black pair can be worn with any outfit, making the cost per wear much more compelling.

3. Layer Obsessively

I must have 30 white t-shirts. Some loose, some tight, some thick, some thin. I’m the goldilocks of white tees. You’d think I’d be rolling around in white t’s and jeans all the time but that’s actually not the case! I layer with tshirts to add warmth to thin knits, over camisoles and with thicker sweaters. While I have eighty million, I’d say about 90% of those tshirts were accumulated while finding my perfect white tshirt. No link here, just head to Dynamite and shop their basics section!
I hope this gives you some ideas (and online shopping guilty pleasure) to update your wardrobe to stay cosy, stylish and happy this fall without breaking the bank. Let me know how you’re updating your wardrobe this year!

Affordable Fitness Wear

I don’t know about you, but I’m a big fan of athletic wear. Most days, I go straight from business clothes to athletic wear, or my onesie. The point being, I own quite a bit of workout wear and it ranges from expensive (looking at you, LuluLemon) to super affordable! This post is a bit of a roundup of my favorite accessible and affordable workout wear- Old Navy, Joe Fresh and Walmart. Everything is linked.

All of these outfits are appropriate for hitting the trails, running some stairs or popping by the gym and cooling down after the fact. You’ll note that most outfits have a jacket or sweater- this is because I personally like to get outdoors when it’s cool at night.

Joe Fresh

Joe Fresh

While this option is the most expensive, I had to include it because of these super on-trend mesh insert leggings. Oftentimes I find going affordable is synonymous with plain basics, but this outfit proves that it doesn’t have to be! Plus, this is the only outfit with four items, keep that in mind.

1.Mesh Active Legging  2. Active Tank 3. Hooded Pullover 4. Active Stripe Cropped Tank

Walmart Athletic Works

Walmart wins for ultimate affordability this time! Plus, it is the only option for a sports bra in this post that has adjustable straps. Double win! This windbreaker is awesome because if you want some coverage for a chance of showers or mad wind, you have it, but it’s unlined and light color so if it’s sunny out still you aren’t melting.

1.Medium Impact Bra 2. Performance Legging 3. Windbreaker

Old Navy

Old Navy

Coming in a mere 55 cents more expensive than Walmart, Old Navy is a great choice not only for their selection, sizing and quality, but because they have a massive 30% off sale online only right now! Shipping is free on all orders over $50, and returns are free so it’s a great option if you’re in the market for some workout wear!

1.Perforated Running Shorts 2. Maximum Support Sports Bra 3. “All Day Long” Tank
