Hey guys! For the first post of my long-promised rose review series I’m reviewing the Big House the Siren rose that comes in a 2-serving (250ml) can! This is a Californian rose dubbed as medium sweetness and easy drinking. First off, this rose comes in a can so it was automatically dubbed by my sister and I as the perfect glamping (glam camping, for the uninitiated) wine. My mum and I found this at Sobeys Cellars ($4.99 for those wondering) while picking out the perfect bottle of prosecco for a special occasion and she really really wanted us to have some to review as part of this series. (Thanks, Mom!) My sister and I tried this wine one night after I had worked all day and taught all night. A 8am-8:30PM day just deserves a rose, right? We cracked these open and enjoyed them on a hot night in…

Hi Guys! This is a brand new series on The Broke Girl Blog and it’s called “Sunday Dinners”- basically, all of those meals our mama’s and grandma’s and dad’s and grand-dad’s did so well that we somehow just don’t know how to make ourselves. Don’t worry, I’ve got you. Actually… my mom’s got you because she’s the one who taught me this. Also, I texted her like eighty times writing this. I had to get it authentic, guys. That’s not code for “Mom always does it but I help” at alllllllll. These won’t be the cheapest meals in the world- these are the ones all of the cheap cooking can help you afford, so you can do that favorite meal every now and again, or when it’s a special Sunday. Traditional Spaghetti and Meatballs Meatballs: 1 Pack ground pork (~3/4 pd) 1 Pack ground beef (~3/4 pd) 2 slices of bread…

Hey Guys! I’m back with a healthy freezer-friendly meal today! This one is actually pretty simple, just a mushroom saute with kale and pancetta over a bed of mixed wild rice! The addition of loads of fresh thyme and a serious deglazing with white wine helps pack a flavorful punch. I have to admit I took a lazy kid shortcut and used pre-cubed pancetta (from my mom’s freezer, thanks @Alberta_Allie!) and pre-washed/sliced mushrooms. Sometimes, when I’m trying really hard to stock up a bunch of meals in a short amount of time, the pre-prepped ingredients really help! Mushroom and Kale Harvest Bowl $2.30 per serving, serves 8 for $18.43 1 Red Onion, chopped- ~1.20 1 package of cremini mushrooms- $3.98 1 package of white mushrooms- $3.98 1/2 package of cubed pancetta (~75 grams)- $3 10 large stems of kale (priced for frozen)- $3 3 Sprigs of Thyme – $0.39 1…

Dieting, or making major life changes to be healthier, can be difficult enough to begin with. Add in that it can be isolating because often we make poor food choices when gathering as a group, and suddenly becoming healthier can become very lonely. One of my very best friends has been on a health and fitness journey for over a year (check her out over at Life as Alyx, she posts some of her healthy recipes there!) so when I ask her over it’s usually her “cheat” meal, but even so I try to provide her with options to make it a bit more healthy for her. I support you, so that means I support your goals, too, right? Recently she came and visited with another friend of ours and we were having a “celebration” dinner of sorts. I wanted to serve something decadent, festive and fun- but I…
