Hey fam, It’s getting more and more expensive out there to keep our food costs down, and with the extreme increases in the cost of utilities in Alberta, as well as gas price uncertainties… we’re all looking for ways to make sure we can take good care of ourselves and our families with whatever we have left over. I have a bunch of affordable food posts coming up, more gardening posts so we can all be more food secure and share with our neighbors, as well as more information on how to help make sure you’re being as energy conscientious as possible. And yes, I’ll be sharing how to make that gorgeous spelt loaf. For today, I’m resharing some favorite affordable posts and the one that started it all- How I went a month without buying any groceries. https://thebrokegirlblog.com/2016/07/04/35-day-no-buy-recap/ https://thebrokegirlblog.com/2021/03/04/my-go-to-cheap-and-easy-meal/ https://thebrokegirlblog.com/2020/04/10/garden-series-choosing-your-garden-type/ There’s a lot to the changes in cost of…

Hey guys! Recently my sister and I had the BEST dinner together, she found The Pioneer Woman’s recipe for white chicken chili in a crock pot and loved the idea of it, but she’s just not a crock pot kind of girl. I know. We are really related, despite this. If you’d like to have white chicken chili that comes together in an hour including prep, check out this recipe! Fast White Chicken Chili $16.66 for 6 or $2.78 per serving Ground Chicken- $2.50 (to save $, I recommend using the frozen uncooked tubes like Superstore offers- you’re looking at saving quite a bit of money, $2.50 will see you adding 1 pound of ground meat) 1 box chicken stock- ~$2.00 2 cans of chopped green chilis- $4.36 3 bell peppers (chopped)- $6.12 2 onions (chopped)- $0.30 4-5 ribs of celery (chopped)- ~$0.60 1 jalapeno, tiny chop- $0.33 2 cups…

Hi guys! I know you are not surprised that since it’s now officially FALL, I am back on the comfort food train! As if my butt needs any more comfort food, but that’s a whole other issue lol. It got very chilly and rainy (?! this is not normal for where I live) last week and after being soaked to the skin twice in one day, I knew what I needed- a warm, hearty risotto and having just finished making corn stock, I figured corn and bacon risotto would be a perfect match for the kind of day I was having. Corn and bacon risotto isn’t exactly a “traditional” risotto, it’s kind of something I just figured would be good a year or so ago, and so I made it! Cooking is all about the fun anyhow, right? Corn and Bacon Risotto $8.82 for four or $2.21 per serving 1/2…

Hey guys! I am SO excited to share with you today my back to college essentials in collaboration with Walmart! Some of you who have been following me from the beginning may know that I had an extended course of study in college, obtaining a certificate, diploma and degree over a 7 year time period. Being in college has been a huge part of my adult life- the first place I wrote professionally, where I became and honed my skills as a people-manager, where I discovered my love of math and -maybe most importantly- where I developed my love for the polytechnic I now also work for. It’s safe to say that in those seven years, some of which I was a full time student and working full time in the finance industry, I developed some tips and tricks for how to design a study space that works and how…

Hey guys! If you’re searching for some casual outfit inspiration for NYE still, you’ve found your place! If you are looking for something a bit more fancy for an upcoming event at an affordable price, I’ve included a bunch of options under $150 below as well. These photos were obviously shot a while ago, but I loved that the dress from Dynamite (no longer available) was comfortable enough for dinner or dancing, but that paired with the faux-leather vest was still casual enough to not make me look like an eighteen-year-old celebrating their first booze-allowable New Year’s Eve. If you wanted to go out dancing, I’d switch to some fun pumps and ditch the vest! The Nine West clutch was my nod to color and I love being able to see my bag in the sea of black clutches when getting ready at a girlfriend’s place. Dressier options: Parker Montclair…

Hey Guys! I hope this last week before Christmas is treating you well and that you’re ready (or almost ready) for the big day on Sunday. I have been super busy given that I started a new job on Monday (part time currently, but loving it!) and came home to a house raining inside of itself on Monday as well. I could go alllll into that situation but I will save it, as it’s not yet resolved. Suffice it to say, I’ve had my zen turned on to not go all whacky about it. Does anyone else feel that way about their homes, like God help anyone who doesn’t take me seriously about this, they’re going to have their ear talked off? Probably more people feel that way about their kids I’m guessing! Anywho, back to the point of this- if you’re like me, Christmas can be one of the biggest…
