Hey Guys!

I hope you all had the merriest of Christmases and are still spending oodles of time together with your families. This recipe is one that is great to make for a crowd, or to split amongst family members. It was included in my gift baking boxes this year, but I wanted to share it between Christmas and New Years because it offers something a little different than the often-sickly sweet treats of the season. Salty, crunchy and with a hit of heat, this snack mix is the perfect thing to set out when you’re enjoying a few drinks or bring to a holiday party.

I think we’ve all seen the recipes for snack mixes that are basically knockoffs of popular box brands but actually not as delicious. This is not that. It’s a recipe that has been adapted and honed for years to get it where it is today- delicious, and a step above the commercially available options. This is definitely not your mama’s snack mix. Unless your mama is my mum… in which case, it is.

Not Your Mama’s Snack Mix

Cost (before seasonings): ~$22

1 Jumbo or Family sized Box each of Cheerios and Shreddies

1 large bag of pretzels

2 bags of gold fish

Optional: Peanuts

1 lb of butter (unsalted)

2 tsp cayenne

2 tsp chili powder

2 tsp seasoning salt

1 tbsp paprika

1 tbsp garlic powder

1 tbsp onion powder

1 tbsp black pepper

Pre-heat your oven to 200 degrees and start off with a large turkey roaster to split your Cheerios, Shreddies, pretzels and gold fish into the roaster lid and bottom. Mix everything together in your hands.

Next, measure out all of your spices into a microwave safe measuring cup, and add your butter. Microwave in 20-30 second increments until the butter is melted and spices incorporated. Then, pour half over one of your roasters and mix, and reserve the remaining half for the second roaster. Pop the roaster with the butter mixture into the oven and set a timer for 20 minutes. This mix bakes for 2 hours per roaster, stirring it every 20 minutes. Once 2 hours is up, re-melt the remaining butter mixture and do the same with the second roaster.

Do you have a favorite holiday snack? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
