Hey guys!

Today’s gift guide is for the new homeowner. I love having my own home and the stability, equity building and credit building potential of it but it is so expensive to own your own place and live alone. My family was (and still is) so good about gifting me things that they know I could use in my home or think I could benefit from, and it’s been incredibly helpful.

The first item I’d like to mention is my security system. Where I live, there is sometimes a three hour wait for a home invasion call. I kid you not, there was a man trying to break into a business in my city about a year ago and he was armed and the people inside also waited for hours. I don’t live in a world where I think that an alarm system = increased safety, I believe that an alarm system = increased awareness and that increased awareness can lead to enhanced personal safety. For that reason, and financial reasons, I do not have a monitored alarm system that reports to the police. Instead, I have a Skylink Net system that my dad found and installed for me, which allows me to monitor my own home and check entry and exits, have armed windows and doors, and real-time push notifications in the case of an alarm- or even just a door opening. It also has an in-home “hub” that has an awesomely loud alarm in it that will alert you if a door or window contact or motion detector is breached while you sleep. You can check it out at www.skylinkhome.com, and choose a starter kit that fits your needs and budget.

Other awesome ideas for the new homeowner include things like a pretty bowl or platter for putting keys etc in by the door, a fruit basket that actually matches their decor style and durable, plentiful, pretty coasters. Nobody likes their brand new home sullied by water rings, right? A bigger, and hugely thoughtful gift would be a subscription to Netflix, since money could be tight and cable is an easy expense to cut.

  1. Hey Gee, Thank you for the recommendation of the SkylinkNet System. The system is very flexible and allows you to add up to 100 home security and home automation sensors and receivers, as well as 10 cameras. SkylinkNet is also IFTTT compatible, which allows you to interface with other connected smart home devices. the possibilities are endless! Happy Holidays!
